We are counting apples in an orchard. We count by ones, twos, fives, and tens, and then express the number of apples as groups of tens and ones left over.

Forty-three in all. It sure took a long time to count them one by one. You know you could count these forty-three more quickly if you group them in pairs.

Five, ten, fifteen, twenty, twenty-five, thirty, thirty-five, forty and three left over is forty-three.

Counting by five is quicker than counting by ones or counting by twos. But, hmmm, we know that five and five more is ten. So how about counting these apples by ten.

What is the greatest number of ten in fifty-seven?Why?

Fifty-seven is greater than fifty and less than sixty.

There are five tens in fifty and six tens in sixty.

So the greatest number of groups of ten in fifty-seven is five  and there are seven ones left over.
