How can we group plants?   

The Big question is: Other than clean air, what do plants give us?

1. Observation:

Plants that we can eat---Edible

Plants that we cannot eat---Inedible

Let’s identify edible and inedible plants.

Bark is inedible.    Blueberry is edible  Banana is edible   Leaf is inedible.

Maple leaf is inedible. Flower is inedible.  Apple is edible.  Pineapple is edible.

2. Construct Hypothesis:  

Plants can give us food.

Vegetables are edible.

Bark is inedible.

Leaf is sometimes edible.

Which of these plants have leaves? Which have petals?

Flowers have petals.

Trees have leaves.

Let’s identify fruits and vegetables.

From this chart ,we know fruit and vegetable are edible.Stem,leaf,seed,root and petal are sometimes edible.Trunk,branch and bark are inedible.

Let's make a salad, the recipe is leaf,stem,root and seed.

We will use ginger because it is the root of an edible plant.

We will use corn because it is the seed of an edible plant.

We will use this vegetable because it is the leaf and stem of an edible plant.

We will use these seeds because they are the seeds of an edible plant.

3.Test Hypothesis:

Grasses are group of plants. Trees are another group.

Edible plants are a group. Nonedible plants are another group.

4. Draw a Conclusion:

Plants can give us food. Some parts of plants are edible.
