Grain of Rice.

Long ago in India, there was a king. He took almost all of the people’s rice. “I will store the rice for you,” said the king. But when a famine came, the king would not give out the rice.

One day, an elephant carried two baskets of rice to the king. The rice was falling from a basket. A girl named Rani saw it. She caught the falling rice with her sari.

Rani returned the rice to the king. The king was very happy, “Ask me for anything, and you shall have it.”

“My king,” said Rani. “Please give me one grain of rice.”

“Only one grain of rice?” The king was very surprised.

“Well, if it pleases my king,” said Rani. “You may reward me in this way. Today, you will give me one grain of rice. Tomorrow two grains of rice, the next day four grains of rice, and so on for 30 days.”

“No problem,” said the king. Rani got one grain of rice that day.

The next day, Rani got two grains of rice.

Each day, the number doubled.

On the 13th day, she got 4096 grains of rice. That was a bowl of rice.

On the 22nd day, she got 16 bags of rice.

The king was very worried. “One grain of rice has grown very much,” he thought. “But I shall keep my promise, as a king should.

On the 30th day, 256 elephants came to carry the rice.

The king gave all the rice to Rani. “What will you do with all this rice?” asked the king with a sigh.

“I shall give it to all the hungry people,” said Rani. “And I shall leave a basket of rice for you, too, if you promise never to take more rice than you need.”

“I promise,” said the king. And from then on, the king was truly wise and fair, as a king should be.
