Maps are pictures

that show

where places are  

in relation to

each other.

Look at this map.

The pacific ocean is to the west of California.

We can sail north from Florida to New York.

Some maps have a legend or key.

The legend lists the symbols

used on the map.

You can read the words

next to the symbols

to find out

what they represent.

On this map,

the dot shows the exact location of

the city of Corinth.

Many maps also use color

to show different features.

 Usually water is blue on a map.

Colors can also be used to

identify different countries.

On this map

the green color shows the country of Italy.
